I visited the The Museum of Bath at Work, Julian Road, and found these original labels (£3 a packet). They are Lithographic prints, the designs drawn (in reverse) onto stones and printed on a direct press similar to one we have. The stone used to print the Bowlers Soda Water label is in one of the cases upstairs. Labels are printed onto thin paper, and would have been stuck on the bottles by hand.
Some bottles have embossed glass "labels", where the bottle was made in 2 haves, and the molten glass poured into moulds lined with punched out metal stencils which made the designs.
The museum has a huge collection of bottles used for carbonated drinks, machinery, documents, ephemera, etc.
